Viewing Platform

This place is top of The lighthouse building by Mackintosh and it was designed well to see landscape of Glasgow central. There are windows with different size and position so people can enjoy that panorama view of the city at once. I think it is important and nice to offer special places with diverse ways to encourage people to see and feel landscape with various objects such as windows.

The idea of material and structure to display art works in an exhibition was interesting. While I was visiting and seeing art works in exhibitions in Glasgow, they have special and unique style of displaying depending on different theme of exhibitions and I could see good examples how to simply and effectively display works with specific material in a room.

Symbols in The lighthouse by C.R. Mackintosh

I have seen interesting symbols that represent toilet, confused and dreamer(from the top) and all of them are in The lighthouse of Mackintosh. I could not stop saying "They are funny and clever" when I found that kind of symbols in the building. :)

C.R.Mackintosh (1868-1928)
-Architect, artist and designer
He was born in 1868 in the townhead area of Glasgow and his massive works are inspired from Scottish traditions, the flourish of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Japanese forms. He has done diverse projects and design on not only architecture but also artistic field. During the trip, I was very glad to see his unique works and Scottish style as well. Pictures I attached are that I have taken in Kelvingrove Art Gallery&Museum and The lighthouse which was in centre of the city and designed by him.
The most memorable fact was I was encouraged to think about doing design works on various fields including Landscape Architecture and Design in the future by his various works through cross cultural and colourful fields.

Glasgow [City view]
-Field study trip(Focus week) 03-05.MAR.2009

One of interesting features of Glasgow city was that the city centre looks like pedestrian’s paradise.
In face, there is main street called "Buchanan street"and it is always opened for only pedestrian so the street has unique landscape among various shops and buildings on the hill and also can have dynamic views and momement of people. I think it makes the city centre looks more lively and active.
Design on public furniture and pattern&materials of street were different from one in London, especially, I could see specific material that seems to be sand stone or something like that for buildings and street in Glasgow centre during the trip. Therefore, I have had a great visit to see similar and different views of the city in Scotland I can compare with London's.

Landscape of a canal in guildford

A Canal in Guildford

I think canals are not only routes for boats but also space that included cultural, historical and environmental things to create special views mainly based on water.
There are various landscapes and natural views even though many canals are manmade routes.
Therefore, I was pleased to see beautiful scenery during a trip by a narrow boat.

There is a lock which is next of restoration site and is not used nowadays in Wey&Arun Canal.
As you can see, canal locks look like that pictures and normally they are made with two sluices between different parts of levels in a canal.

Wey&Arun Canal Restoration

Recently, a lot of canals including locks are under construction as restoration in UK because of its decrepitude, new routes as follow as recent roads and restoration of historical canals that are not used today.

“Whenever a derelict canal is to be restored, the first practical job is to clear out and remove the growth of trees, bushes etc which have grown up during the period when the canal was neglected. This is often called 'jungle bashing' or 'jungle busting'. In the case of the Wey & Arun Canal the period of neglect had been well over a century.”

A Canal lock

It was the first time to sail a canal narrow boat and pass a lock so very interesting. In fact, I have had no idea about canals and even a way to sail because there is no special culture of canals in Korea. However, I could learn and see how canal locks work properly during that sailing and I think locks are important between two parts of a canal that have different levels. The lock helps boats to go through from a high level canal to a low level one like a lift for boats.
