I think the most important idea to design a public place is make people to do various activities and can participate in creation to the atmosphere through diverse methodes.
When I visited there after renovation in end of 2005, I could not believe the area is that I uaed to know as the Cheonggyecheon I have been there with my professors and classmates as a study trip. There is totally different compare with the landscape in the past so I could not realised the area at first time when I went out of the underground station near there. I saw the big fountain on the upstream area and it is the remarkable structure to recognize the Cheonggyecheon. I like the design and the purpose of the fountain because it shows identity as a gateway on the centre of the big city. The fountain has got a balance with stream because of water and a vertical contrast as well. Moreover, it makes people be fresh, especially, in the summer.
The wall next of the pavement has got various theme so there are many temporary exhibitions and artistic objects by companies, associations and the citizen. It means the citizen can make the atmosphere of the Cheonggyecheon to the marvellous public space by themselves.
Recently, there are many events that are such temporary exhibitions, fashion shows and various public perfomances. So whenever people want to enjoy and have fun with their family and friends, they have the nice place and it is also easy to approach there.
The Cheonggyecheon was designed with consideration about the relationship among the exsistent buildings(Office, Shops, restaurants, cafes and etc), Historic Heritages, the transport system and what visitors and local people want to do there.
For that works, the Cheonggyecheon was made to the nice public place where people can do many activities and has been developing to be better nowadays as well.
I will look forward to visiting there when I go to Korea as my holiday next year and want to see how it works and developes compare with what I saw when I visited before. I am so excited to do that.
